Where am I: About the Bladder & Cystitis > Types of Cystitis

Types of Cystitis
There are several types of cystitis, including:
- Bacterial cystitis – if bacteria reach the bladder, they can multiply and irritate the bladder lining, causing the symptoms of cystitis. Bacteria can be introduced into the bladder in a number of ways. For more information, click here.
- Interstitial cystitis (IC) – this is a condition that causes recurring discomfort in the bladder and pelvic region. Although IC may cause similar symptoms to bacterial cystitis, it rarely involves the presence of an infection. One of the key recognisable differences between IC and bacterial cystitis is that the pain experienced with IC is temporarily relieved by urination. Bacterial cystitis, however, will cause a burning sensation during urination. For more information on IC click here.
- Radiation cystitis – often occurs in patients undergoing radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer.
